Small Bathroom Counter Decor
Keith Scott Morton
I have a typical-size bathroom, but it has 10-foot ceilings. I don't feel like I'm utilizing the extra wall space, and the shower curtain looks funny. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Julie,
Ten-foot ceilings are a great feature in a small space. High ceilings can make your small bath feel much bigger. Unfortunately, they can also make the room feel out of proportion. I have a few suggestions for breaking up the wall height and making the most of the space in your bathroom.
Consider putting some pattern on the wall. A large-print wallpaper is great in a room with high ceilings -- it's a really dramatic look and will add interest to your tall walls. If you're not a fan of wallpaper, you could also break up the height by adding wainscoting to the bottom part of the wall -- up to a height of about 48 inches (or less, depending on the look you want). This would give your walls some character and make the bathroom feel larger and more in proportion to the ceiling height.
You can easily bring the ceiling down in the shower area by having a longer-than-standard curtain made. This would make up the difference a bit in the height, although you'll need to be careful not to make the curtain too long, as it will look enormous and out of scale. A maximum of 90 inches long would work for your shower curtain. Another option would be to add a decorative architectural valance in the shower area. You could use a salvaged architectural ornament, like an old exterior piece of trim from a Victorian house. This would frame the area and add interest, and you could then mount the curtain rod at a standard height, with a standard shower curtain. For a new architectural ornament, try www.fypon.com. This company has thousands of trim pieces that would look great. Check out the scalloped molding (#MLD640-8). It's a great-looking fleur-de-lis style. Also check out www.vintagewoodworks.com, which has a large selection of spandrels and fretwork in custom lengths.
To make the most of the wall space in your bath, try adding some shelves or a tall cabinet. There is nobody that utilizes wall space better and offers more accessible solutions than IKEA (www.ikea-usa.com). It offers a variety of wall shelving in styles from stained and painted woods to chrome and glass options. It also has an extensive bathroom collection, and some of the wall units and cabinets come in tall sizes. The Vättern/Lonnen series includes a high cabinet that is 76 1/2 inches tall and would be great for toiletries, towels and bulk bathroom supply storage.
Good luck with your project.
